Amazon Handmade Profit Calculator
Planning estimate for the US store / US-established seller. Confirm current Amazon terms and your actual statement before pricing. Income tax, VAT obligations, refunds, storage, subscriptions, and costs not entered above are not included.
Amazon Handmade has a relatively simple headline fee, but that headline is not a complete profit model. Buyer-paid shipping can increase the referral-fee base, fulfillment costs differ between FBA and merchant fulfillment, and UK Digital Services Fee treatment can depend on where the seller is established. Production labor, packaging, advertising, returns, and taxes can change the answer again.
Amazon Handmade US fees
Amazon's official US Handmade page states that Handmade deducts 15% or $0.30 for each unit shipped, whichever is greater. Handmade requires a Professional selling plan, normally $39.99 per month. Approved Handmade sellers pay the first month, and Amazon waives the ongoing monthly plan charge after that first month.

Amazon Handmade UK fees
Two official Amazon figures need to be read together. The UK Handmade landing page displays a 12.24% referral fee, while Amazon's detailed UK fee schedule lists Handmade at a 12% base rate with a £0.25 per-item minimum. Amazon separately explains that a 2% Digital Services Fee applies to Selling on Amazon fees and FBA fees for a UK-established seller selling in the UK store. Applying 2% to the 12% base referral fee produces an effective percentage of 12.24% when the percentage, rather than the minimum, controls.
Digital Services Fee = base referral x applicable DSF rate
total referral cost = base referral + Digital Services Fee
Do not apply 12.24% blindly to every seller or every European store. The DSF depends on the seller's country of establishment and the store in which the sale occurs. The calculator therefore exposes the DSF assumption instead of hiding it inside one permanent percentage.

What belongs in the referral-fee base?
Amazon's US pricing page defines an item's total price as its list price plus shipping and gift-wrapping charges. Amazon UK similarly defines total sales price as the amount paid by the buyer for the item, delivery, and gift wrapping. Charging delivery separately therefore does not avoid the referral fee.
Do not add marketplace tax that Amazon separately collects and remits as though it were seller revenue. UK listing prices can already include VAT, so do not automatically strip VAT out of the displayed item price. Enter VAT or other tax the seller must remit in the seller-tax field, based on the seller's actual tax treatment. Add tax charged on Amazon's own fees to other order costs.
FBA and MFN are different cost paths
The Handmade referral fee applies under both fulfillment methods. With Fulfillment by Amazon, Amazon stores inventory and handles picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. A complete FBA estimate can also require storage, inbound transportation, placement, preparation, labeling, returns processing, aged-inventory, removal, or disposal costs.
Since April 17, 2026, Amazon applies a 3.5% fuel and logistics-related surcharge to US FBA fulfillment fees. The current UK surcharge is 1.5%. These percentages apply to fulfillment fees, not the product sale price. Amazon says its Revenue Calculator and fee-preview tools have been updated for the surcharges.
The safest workflow is to copy the current per-unit FBA fulfillment estimate from Amazon rather than reconstructing a changing size-and-weight table. If the copied estimate already includes the current surcharge, do not add it again. For a UK account, also check whether the displayed estimate includes the applicable Digital Services Fee.
With MFN or FBM, there is no FBA fulfillment or Amazon storage charge. Enter the seller's actual packaging, outbound postage, insurance, handling labor, storage, and expected return-shipping cost instead. Never subtract both FBA outbound fulfillment and merchant postage for the same unit; inbound shipping to an FBA facility is a different expense.

Profit formula
After calculating the appropriate referral cost, combine all non-referral expenses: materials, direct labor, packaging, fulfillment, ads, a return reserve, taxes payable by the seller, tax on Amazon fees, and any fixed monthly cost allocated per unit.
For an approved Handmade seller after the first month, the plan allocation can normally be zero. In the first month, or while the account is not yet receiving the waiver, allocate the amount actually charged across realistic monthly units. A break-even price should be solved with the minimum referral fee and DSF logic active rather than by assuming one flat percentage.
Worked US MFN example
Suppose a handmade product sells for $40 and the buyer pays $5 shipping. The referral base is $45, so the US referral fee is $6.75. If production and labor cost $12, packaging is $1.50, postage is $6, advertising is $4, and the return reserve is $2, estimated profit is $12.75. The estimated margin is 28.3%. This example assumes an approved maker after the first month and excludes seller-specific taxes.
Eligibility and important exceptions
Handmade approval matters. Existing Amazon sellers must classify eligible products for Handmade so they appear in the Handmade store and receive the program's benefits. Products outside the allowed Handmade categories may use ordinary category rules instead. Amazon UK also identifies digital or downloadable products, Food & Grocery, and Electronics as categories not currently available in Handmade.
Personalized products have another major limitation: Amazon states that products customized through Amazon Custom must be fulfilled by the seller and cannot use FBA. Select MFN for those products even if standard inventory is sent through FBA.
Finally, cross-border selling introduces store-specific fees, VAT, import obligations, customs, and currency conversion. This calculator does not automatically model those obligations, income tax, refunds, chargebacks, or every optional FBA service. Use Amazon's current Revenue Calculator and Fee Preview, then reconcile actual orders against the transaction-level entries in Seller Central.

The standalone US and UK Etsy fee calculator provides the more detailed Etsy-only breakdown, while the eBay fee and profit calculator models category tiers, per-order charges, advertising, and international costs.
